spring, summer’s work done
solid sunlight floats to earth
yellow, red, orange
spring and summer’s work is done
sunshine,
once photons, rays, waves
months ago descended,
(urgent 8-minute,
93-million-mile beam)
terrestrial desire wooing, spurring
this short-long trek captured
for a spell
in backyard’s ginkgo
caught in cells,
forming
petiole, midrib, veins, lamina
and this stored sunshine,
once summer green, now,
more true to form
arranged in autumn’s bright
blinding bouquet of
yellow - canary, daffodil, lemon
and for a moment
this ever-evolving, sun-bearing tree
pauses and basks
for just a moment
a sun-globe of radiant glory
then sunshine,
its arboreal sojourn complete,
rested, replenished, unhurried
this glowing substance,
these solid sunbeam packets
set off on
dappled descent downward
continuing the cosmic journey
with leisurely
swing and sway
finally homeward
down, down, down
to earth’s bed
below
