Aug 23: Mind the gap

There’s a gap sometimes
Between what is and what was expected.
Between the hoped for and reality,
Like the void from an extracted tooth,
The tongue continually probing
Continually re-minding.
There is a gap
Between what I know about God
And what I experience of him.
Between the revealed and the relational.
Between the head and the heart.
Between orthodoxy and orthopraxy.
The awareness of the gap
Both increases longing and
At times frustration or,
Dare I say anger,
Sitting like a festering wound
Or grating grinding background noise.
Like the raw grief for something that never was.
How does one mind the gap
In a healthy way?
Live into the void?
Live the question?
Love the mystery?
Accept or mourn?
Cry out or strike out?
I don’t know.
But I do know,
I want you to know,
I mind the gap.
